A resolution expressing the Sheboygan Common Council’s support for Ukraine and the People of Ukraine seemed like a no-brainer, but it ran into some discussion on Monday night.
The resolution as written from Alderpersons Grazia Perella and Betty Ackley was scrutinized when Alderperson Andre Walton raised the issue of the Azov Battalion, a far-right paramilitary unit of the National Guard of Ukraine with alleged Neo-Nazi leanings. Walton wanted it to be known that the Sheboygan Common Council “stands against all forms of anti-semitism and white nationalism…” and motioned that it be amended to add: “While we stand with the people of Ukraine, we condemn the actions and ideology of the Azov Battalion.”
The resolution was amended and after brief discussion, except for two “nay” votes due to unfamiliarity with the new information, the resolution passed.
Editor’s note: The two “nay” votes were cast before the discussion concerning the proposed amendment. Following discussion, the measure passed unanimously.
