A Champion will be crowned on Thursday at the World Championship Cheese Contest being held in Madison, and with all other results in, many local makers are showing their dominance.
Among those winning Best of Class:
The Kiel Production Team of Land O Lakes took Best of Class in Cheddar, Aged 1-2 years, beating strong competition from Cabot, Vermont.
Sartori Cheese of Plymouth took Best of Class and third place for their Sartori Classic Asiago entries.
Henning’s Cheese for Deere Creek took Best of Class for their Deer Creek the Night Walker – a flavored hard cheese – while Sartori took Third award in that category for their Sartori Reserve Espresso BellaVitano, and placed forth with their Merlot BellaVitano.
Pine River Pre-Pack of Newton cleaned up in the Cold Pack Cheese category, taking all top five places for a variety of flavored products, and took third place for their Garlic & Herb Gourmet Cold Pack Cheese Spread in the Cheese Spread category.
Sargento made Best of Class and Second Place in the Shredded Cheese Bends class for their Tuscan Blend and Regal Blend respectively. Masters Gallery placed 4th in that category for their Shredded Hot Pepper Cheese Blend.
In contests where area cheesemakers took second through fifth places:
Henning’s Cheese of Kiel took second and third places for Traditional Waxed Cheddar, Sharp to Aged in a cheese made for Deer Creek Cheese.
Hennings took third place for their Colby.
The Cascade Cheese Team placed fifth for their Aged Provolone, while Cedar Valley Cheese of Belgium took Best of Class and third place in the Smoked Provolone category.
Land O Lakes in Kiel placed fourth and fifth in a razor-close contest for Medium Cheddar, falling short by less than five-hundredths of a point from third place, and one-tenth out of first. A Masters Gallery entry made by the same Kiel producer placed fifth in the Sharp Cheddar category.
Sartori tied for fifth with their Sartori SarVecchio Parmesan.
Henning Cheese took second place for their Chipotle Cheddar Daisy in the medium heat class.
Sargento took second place in the Open Class Shredded Cheeses with their Sartori SarVecchio Parmesan Shred.
The World Championship Cheese Contest crowns the champion in a live webcast at 2PM Thursday.
