Ambrose Stephanie, age 84, of Fond du Lac, passed away on Wednesday (February 16, 2022) at Sage
Meadow in Fond du Lac, where he had been a resident for the last 8 months.
He was born on September 25, 1937 on the family farm in the Town of Russell, Sheboygan County, a son
of the late John and Frances (Kraus) Stephanie. He attended St. Claudius Grade School in St. Cloud,
graduating from 8 th grade in 1952.
On April 8, 1961, Ambrose married Rosemary “Rosie” Rach at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel.
Together they owned and operated the family farm near St. Cloud. In 1983, they moved to St. Peter and
owned and operated a small convenience store, known as Stephanie’s Grocery. In 1993, they closed the
store and moved to Plymouth and Ambrose worked for Johnson School Bus Service until 2009.
Ambrose was a former member of St. Peter Lions Club and St. Cloud Catholic Knights. He enjoyed
tinkering around and spending time with his loving family.
In retirement, he enjoyed his many trips with Rosie including: Hawaii, Alaska, Las Vegas, and the Grand
Canyon.
Survivors include: His loving wife of 60 years: Rosie; Three daughters: Sue (Joe) Stoll of Fond du Lac,
Mary (Gary) Fortney of Fond du Lac, and Ginny (Steve) Holzmann of Elkhart Lake; Five grandchildren:
Lisa (Nic) Thome of Fond du Lac, Scott Stoll of Fond du Lac, Nicole (Trey) Johnson of Fond du Lac, Kristi
(Zach) Henning of Kiel, and Jessica Holzmann (Fiancé: Darick Landolt) of Sheboygan; Two great-
grandchildren: Connor Johnson and Evelyn Thome.
He is further survived by: Brothers and Sisters-in-law: Arlene (Harold) Schuessler of Sheboygan, Marge
Sass of Plymouth, Marvin (Chris) Rach of Fond du Lac, Jerry Rach of Rochester, MN, and Ralph
Diefenthaler of Kiel; Two special cousins: Paul (Ginger) Stephanie and Joe (Carol) Stephanie, both of St.
Cloud; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ambrose was preceded in death by: His parents; Brother: Roger (Letty) Stephanie; Sister: Rosella
(Orville) Schwanke; Son-in-law: Joe Burkhardt; and Brothers and Sisters-in-law: Donna Diefenthaler,
Ronnie (Delores) Rach, Bernice (Erne) Kohlmann, Charlie Rach, and Yvonne Rach.
Private Funeral Services will be held with Father Larry Abler officiating. Burial will be in St. John the
Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Ambrose’s name.
The family would like to send special thanks to the staff at Sage Meadows Assisted Living, for the
wonderful care and compassion given to Ambrose.
