One could argue that the pandemic wave caused by the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has done its worst in Sheboygan County, based upon recent data from the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health and the State Department of Health Services.
The pace of the growth of active cases has slowed in the last few weeks. From Friday, January 7th to Friday the 14th, the number of active cases grew by 1,861. The following week that growth was 1,396. And for the past week, the number of active cases on Friday the 28th was just 204 higher than the past Friday the 14th, after experiencing a virtual day-to-day plateau.
Friday’s Coronavirus Case Dashboard from the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health indicated 160 new confirmed cases, balanced against 255 recoveries and one death, yielding a current active case count of 5,118, down 96 from Thursday. 27,922 cases in all have been confirmed since March, 2020.
The most recent casualty was a resident in their 70s. Of the now 230 deaths in Sheboygan County, one was between 10 and 19 years old, six were in their 30s, nine were in their 40s, fifteen were in their 50s, thirty-five were in their 60s, fifty-five were in their 70s, and 109 were at least 80 years of age.
Another two persons were added to the number of those hospitalized so far, which has reached 1,119. After the death and discharges, the current patient population dropped by 3 to 29 persons.
The level of community transmission in Sheboygan County remains “high”, with a 7-day new case count of 1,173.92 per 100,000 persons, a decline of 92.9 points in the last day. The percent of tests returning positive in the last 7 days declined by 1.64% to 31.9% positive. Another sign of a receding wave was seen in the 7-day average of daily new confirmed cases in Sheboygan County, which peaked at 282 on January 10th. The latest figure, from January 27th, was 118.
Only 20 new recipients of vaccine against COVID-19 were registered in the last day, bringing that total to 71,395 persons, or 62.0% of the county population. Another 58 persons completed their vaccination series, bringing that total to 67,476, or 58.6%.
