Kenneth E. Stein, 76, of Kiel, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at home, surrounded by his family. Ken was born March 2, 1945 at the family homestead in Town Meeme, to the late Arthur Sr. and Rosa (Baer) Stein. He attended grade school at St. Fidelis in Spring Valley and graduated from Kiel High School in 1963. Ken proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1963 until 1967 during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he completed courses at Marion College and Lakeshore Technical College.
On December 18, 1965, he married Nancy A. Kornetzke at St. George Catholic Church in Elkhart Lake. He was employed by Tecumseh and Stoelting for many years. He also was an office manager at Ristow Roofing and worked at Steinthal Valley Lodge, Cantwell’s Country Inn and Altona supper club as a bartender. He was a member of the Audit and Board of Directors of LaTec Credit Union (Premier Credit Union), APICS – Fox Valley Chapter, Kiel VFW Post #6707, Kiel Optimists, served on the Board of Directors for SPPS and was a trustee at St. George’s Parish. Ken was a lifelong member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Kiel.
Ken enjoyed playing and coaching baseball, as well as sports of all kinds, gardening, music (especially polka), playing drums, cooking (especially grilling), making rosaries and traveling across the United States and Europe.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy, which he said marrying was “the best decision I ever made in my life.”; children, Christine M. Stein, Sharon K. (Stein) Pitzen, Daniel K. (Cris) Stein and David J. (Jessica) Stein; grandchildren, Grace, Jackson and Cooper Pitzen, Megan and Andrew Stein and Michael Stein; brothers, Harold (Marcy) Stein and Art Stein; sisters, Mary Ann Kreps, Rosemary (Clyde) Weiland, Joan (Mike) Ostertag, Rosann Hermans and Karen Junk; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dolores Knier, Bob (Peggy) Kornetzke, Helen Kornetzke and Diane Kornetzke. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Albin Sr. and Gertrude Kornetzke, sisters, Margaret Stein and Lucille (Joe) Binder, brothers, Fr. Norbert Stein, SSJ, and Ray (Ginny) Stein; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Raymond Kornetzke, Roman Knier, Dan (Karen) Kornetzke, Albin Kornetzke, Jr., Steve Hermans, Jerry (Darlene) Kornetzke, and Liz Stein.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 12:00 p.m on Monday, January 31, 2022, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church (423 Fremont Street, Kiel) with military honors accorded by Kiel VFW Post #6707. Visitation will be on Monday, at the church, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. A rosary will be recited at 11:30 a.m. Cremation will follow the Mass with burial at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
