A revenue re-estimate by Wisconsin’s Legislative Fiscal Bureau was “Fantastic News” in the eyes of Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg.
The Bureau reviews the state’s general fund each January, and the latest review found an ending balance of $3.8 billion dollars, over $2.9 billion above estimates made just three months ago. The review said that besides more tax and departmental revenue than expected, much of the overage was tied to money from the federal American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA, funds.
Senator Lemahieu said that Wisconsin is in its best fiscal position ever, but because of the one-time influx of federal money, “We will not be foolish with these tax dollars by spending them into the future. Rather, we will focus on further tax relief in the next budget to continue our state on a positive trajectory and ensure the long-term health of the state budget and, more importantly, family budgets.”
Governor Tony Evers said he’s not willing to wait for the next budget session to spend the money, saying instead that “Wisconsinites need help making ends meet and can’t wait until the next biennial budget – they need relief now.”
