The past week in Sheboygan County saw an unprecedented increase in the number of COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, and now the highest number hospitalized for treatment. 2,342 additional cases were logged since last Friday, amounting to 9.5% of the total case count since the County Division of Public Health began keeping records on the pandemic in March of 2020. An average of 334.6 new cases were added in each of the last 7 days.
As of Friday’s update on the County’s Coronavirus Case Dashboard, 24,633 cases were tallied, up 368 from Thursday. Active cases numbered 3,518, 292 more than the previous day. During the same time, only 61 recoveries were reported.
Another death due to COVID-19 upped the toll to 188, the latest casualty being at least 80 years old. Of the 188 victims, one was between 10 and 19 years old, four were in their 30s, seven were in their 40s, eight were in their 50s, twenty-eight were in their 60s, forty-five were in their 70s and ninety-five were at least 80 years old.
1,097 Sheboygan County residents have needed hospitalization to this point, and a new high of 49 are currently being treated, five more than on Thursday.
The level of community transmission in Sheboygan County is considered “High”, with a case rate of 2,073.87 new cases (per 100,000 persons) in the last 7 days, a figure that’s increased by over 407 points in the last day. 32.1% of tests in the last week came back positive.
61.5% of the county, or 70,840 persons, have now received at least one dose of vaccine, up 78 since Thursday. With 87 more becoming fully vaccinated, that total is now 66,825, or 58%.
