The rapid resurgence of COVID-19 has Hospital Sisters Health System imposing visitor restrictions at its hospitals, including Sheboygan’s St. Nicholas, beginning today.
The decision announced Thursday echoes policies put in place in 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic first swept into Wisconsin. The focus of the effort now is to protect staff and to preserve hospitals’ capacity to provide all necessary treatment. The Wisconsin Hospital Association reports that as of Thursday, 94% of all available hospital beds were occupied in the Southeast Wisconsin District which includes Sheboygan.
Patients at St. Nicholas’ Emergency Department, outpatient services patients, surgery and obstetrical patients may all have one support person that remains in designated areas at all times. Pediatric patients under age 18 may have two parents or guardians present, and end-of-life situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
As usual, all visitors will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms and will have to wear a surgical-grade facemask, which will be supplied if you don’t have one. Vaccination status and previous history of COVID-19 won’t affect the need for restrictions.
