The Sheboygan Salvation Army isn’t short on faith and hope, but their kettles did fall a bit short during the Christmas bell-ringing campaign according to Carrye Jo Cony, the Development Director for the Sheboygan Salvation Army. She told us that “Our kettles have raised just over $100,000 with a good push in the week leading up to Christmas. That is, unfortunately still a little short of our goal of $135,000, but that’s also to be expected in this very unique year that followed a previous unique year. So, normally we’d end up with about $150,000 pre-COVID, so it kinda puts it in perspective.”
COVID not only cut into contributions, but also took a toll on volunteer numbers. Still, Cony said there were some impressive efforts that will make a big difference for those the Salvation Army serves.
“So I just received the Christmas Eve day totals where we only rang for 4 hours, and in 4 hours raised over $10,000, which is enough to provide more than 350 nights of shelter for a homeless individual.”
There’s still hope that good progress can be made toward the overall goal as the Corporate Campaign runs through New Year’s Eve; and while the physical kettles are now put away for the year, “virtual kettles” are still active at SASheboygan.org.
The website also accepts donations of money and goods year-round because, as Cony put it: “Need knows no season. That’s one thing you always have to remember. While you hear us with the bells at Christmastime, we are here year ‘round to serve those in need.”
