A loan application to fund improvements to Sheboygan’s Water Utility has been submitted to the Wisconsin DNR for public comment.
The City is applying for a 30-year Safe Drinking Water Loan through the State to fund its $35 million project to install a new 54-inch intake extending 6,000 feet into Lake Michigan and construct a new shore well and low-lift pumping station. The facility would be expected to last 100 years.
As planned, the loan would be paid back from water service revenues and wouldn’t impact property taxes or the City budget.
The Safe Drinking Water Loan Program has already determined that there won’t be significant adverse environmental effects and doesn’t anticipate further review, but those who do wish to comment are being asked to contact the DNR.
The public is encouraged to submit comments regarding this decision and the potential environmental impacts of this project. Submit comments by Dec. 22, 2021 to:

Based on the comments received, the SDWLP may prepare an environmental analysis before proceeding with the funding process. The analysis would summarize the Department of Natural Resources’ consideration of the project’s impacts and reasonable alternatives.
