Right on cue, snow was in the air on Sunday as Winter Awareness Week kicks off in Wisconsin.
Officially observed today through Friday by declaration of Governor Evers, Wisconsin Emergency Management Acting Administrator Greg Engle says it’s intended as a reminder for people to brush up on winter driving skills, get your furnace serviced, and make sure you have a fully-supplied home emergency kit. That kit should include food, water, a flashlight with fresh batteries and a blanket. A kit for the vehicle should include a snow shovel, extra gloves and hats, cell phone charger, and kitty litter or sand to give traction on ice if you get stuck.
Wisconsin’s winter weather can be spectacular – and deadly. Winter road conditions were blamed for 41 fatalities and nearly 4,000 injuries over the last five seasons. Land o’ Lakes in Vilas County got the most snowfall in the state last year at 83.2 inches, while Barnes in Bayfield County had the coldest temperature so far this year at 41 below zero on February 15th. Nothing like that is forecast for now – but just be prepared!
