Donald F. Schneider, age 91, formerly of rural Kiel, died peacefully October, 29, 2021 at Manitowoc Health and Rehab Center.
Don was born on August 26, 1930, in Steinthal, Wisconsin. Son of the late Edwin and Lidwina (Hartmann) Schneider, Sr.
He was a graduate of Kiel High School with the class of 1948. He served with the United States Army as a Corporal in the Korean War from 1951-1953. He was in the 25th Infantry Division – Combat Service. On July 28, 1953, he married Priscilla Schneider at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Together they raised five children. Priscilla preceded him in death on February 23, 2008. On January 31, 2017, Don married Joanne Mortimer.
Don worked at Tecumseh Engines in New Holstein, Carnation Foods in Chilton, and Kohler Company until his retirement. He also worked as an independent drywall contractor for most of his working career.
He enjoyed polka music and dancing, puttering in the garage, wood working, and in his younger years he was a member of the Kiel Municipal Band where he played the snare drum. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and just being in nature.
He is survived by his wife: Joanne Schneider, Chilton; four children: Chuck (Karen) Schneider, Mike (Cheryl) Schneider, Dave (Cheryl) Schneider, and Vicky (Mike Heimbach) Schneider; 26 grandchildren, and 49 great-grandchildren. Don is further survived by Joanne’s children: Dan (Erika) Mortimer, Debi (Randy) Brunette, Sandy (Tim) Polcyn, Jean (Tom) Laughrin and Julie (Taddele) Ambachew; 9 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren; his siblings: Allen (Shelby) Schneider, and Elroy (Nancy) Schneider, sisters in-law Millie Thielman, Janice Schneider, and brothers-in-law Jim Schafhauser, Clete (Rita) Schneider, a son-in-law, Ken Ortlieb, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Priscilla, his daughter Virginia “Ginnie” Ortlieb, four little angel great-grandchildren and siblings: Marie “Mutzie” (Roland) Woelfel, Edwin (Fran) Schneider, Jr., sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Imelda (Eldon) Watry, Beatrice Schafhauser, Lucille (Greg) Sukowaty, Cyril Schneider, Marvin Thielman.
Mass of Christian Burial for Don will be celebrated at 1:00PM on Friday, November 5, 2021 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. He will be laid to rest alongside Priscilla at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, November 5, 2021 at the church from 11:00AM until 12:45PM when brief family rites will be held.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Manitowoc Health and Rehab as well as Holy Family Memorial Hospice for the care and compassion shown to Don during his stay.
