If you haven’t already done so, now’s the time to work on your phone’s call directory. That’s because beginning on Sunday, the area code will be needed not only for long distance, but also for all local calls, making 10-digit-dialing the norm in most of the country.
The change is required for all calls currently dialed with only 7 digits so that the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s 3-digit “988” code can be enabled in 36 states including Wisconsin. Although the official launch of the “988” line isn’t until July next year, the changeover begins on Sunday.
Not much else will change, including the customer’s current area code and number. Local calls will remain local; multi-line systems requiring a “9” to dial out will still need it, and current 3-digit numbers like “911” or “511” will remain 3-digits only.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can still be reached by dialing 1-800-273-TALK (8255) even after the “988” code is in effect.
