If the threshold for mandatory masking being considered by the Sheboygan Area School District Board were approved, one school would now be one active case from meeting the metric.
Last night the board proposed having students mask up when a predetermined percentage of the student population tests positive for COVID-19. That would be 2 percent for students up to 6th grade, and 4 percent for 7th through 12th grades, and parents would be able to request an exemption.
Under those criteria Jackson Elementary School, which currently has 5 active cases, would need only one more case to trigger the mandate. That school also has 3 staff affected, which is over 6-1/2% of employees, putting the total percentage at 2.3%, but staff cases aren’t part of the formula being considered.
No action was taken last night, but it’s expected the board will vote at the next meeting which is scheduled for Tuesday, October 26th.

Standards are way too low. By next SASD board meeting, schools will be closed due to the expontentially spread of the Delta variant. The Sheboygan economy will be hurt as workers have to stay home with their children. Stop being bullied by a few irresponsible school board members. Step forward now, parents, employers and board members! All adults working in the schools need to be fully vaccinated to protect our unvaccinated children. Masks need to be worn when there is even 1 Covid 19 case in a school.
