Sheboygan Area School District
The new school year in Sheboygan public schools begins on Wednesday with an official COVID-19 policy that, for now, says that masks are recommended but optional for all students and staff. But that could change after a special meeting of the Sheboygan Area School District Board on Tuesday.
A letter sent to families last Thursday announced the Special Session meeting at 6 PM Tuesday in the South High School Commons with the sole purpose of discussing, and taking possible action on the district’s COVID-19 mask requirements and mitigation strategies.
Masking in schools has become an emotional issue, pitting CDC recommendations of universal indoor masking indoors by everyone 2 and older regardless of vaccination status, against others who see masking as a choice that should be left to parents.
Public input will be gathered before Board members discuss any potential policy changes during Tuesday’s meeting. Guidelines make it clear that comments and suggestions on COVID-19 policies are welcome, but personal criticism of board members or school employees is out-of-order, and there will be a 3-minute limit per person. There won’t be debate, and as this is an input session, answers to any questions or responses from the Superintendent’s office will be returned within a week.
