With the highly-contagious Delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus now dominating the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccinations are being urged to not only prevent serious illness, hospitalization and death, but also to control the spread of the virus. Full FDA approval of the Pfizer vaccine, issued on Monday, may help that cause. But in Sheboygan County, data shows that the willingness to receive vaccinations also has racial barriers.
In its weekly update from the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health that fact was visible in graphics showing vaccination rates. 52.4% of the county population overall had received at least one dose as of Monday, but that held true for only 20% of the county’s Black population. 29.5% of those identified as American Indian had received at least one dose, and 50.3% of the White population had gotten at least one shot. Asians led the list with 55% having one shot. The DPH noted that 3.6% listed their race as “other”, while 1.9% recorded theirs as “unknown”. Rated by ethnicity, Hispanics were at 36.3%, while Non-Hispanics were at 52.9%.
Other data showed females leading males by 56.1% to 48.8%.
