The Guinness Book of World Records says that the largest fine for an overdue book was $345.14 after being turned in 47 years late. No records are likely to be set at Sheboygan’s Mead Public Library…in fact, the days of any late fees look to be headed by the wayside altogether.
At last Thursday’s meeting of the Mead Public Library Finance Committee, Director Garrett Erickson told the group that the elimination of late fines for children last year has worked very well, and hasn’t significantly impacted material returns. He’s now looking at doing the same for adult fines, noting that only overdue fees would be eliminated. Any damaged or lost materials would still be billed to the patron.
A motion to approve waiving adult overdue fines beginning this September 1st passed and now faces full board consideration.
