The latest data from the newly-completed U.S. Census shows Sheboygan County ranks 13th out of Wisconsin’s 72 counties by population, with 118,034 residing here in 2020. The census is done every 10 years and the information it reveals is used for such things as redrawing political districts, calculating economic aid from the federal government and other things such as population trends.
The new data shows that Sheboygan County has added 2,527 persons since 2010, a 2.2% increase, and was among 51 counties showing growth. Dane County grew the fastest, with a 15% increase, while among counties that shrunk, Richland County displayed the greatest change. That southwestern county lost 717 persons for a 4% loss.
Among surrounding counties, Manitowoc lost 83 persons, a point-1 percent reduction, while Calumet County grew fastest at 7.1%, adding nearly 3,500 people. Fond du Lac County added over 2,500 persons, growing 2.5%, Washington County was up 3.7% with 4,874 added there, and Ozaukee County showed nearly 6% growth, adding over 5,100 persons to its population.
Wisconsin lost none of its 8 representatives in the U.S. House, while two neighboring states, Michigan and Illinois, each lost one as their populations declined. Texas gained two representatives as that state grew nearly 16%, adding just under 4 million persons.
The biggest population loser was West Virginia, which shrank 3.2% with a loss of over 59,000 residents.
