The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is warning area residents to avoid burning for now and to be extra careful with any outdoor activities that might result in sparks or flames as a moderate fire danger exists in Sheboygan and surrounding counties to the north and west. Further south in Ozaukee and Washington Counties, that danger is high.
The ongoing drought is causing vegetation to begin drying out, and the DNR says that it has responded to 765 wildfires burning over 1,900 acres already this year. Many others, it says, were suppressed by local fire departments and federal partners.
For now, the advice is to operate chainsaws, off-road vehicles, lawn mowers and other equipment in the early morning or late in the day to avoid sparks during peak burning hours, secure dragging trailer chains, and delay having campfires until the evening.
