Scott (Scooter) James Nelson passed away peacefully on May 8, 2021 while surrounded by his family.
Scott was born on July 25, 1951. He grew up in Cascade, WI, living there until he volunteered to serve in
the Army. Scott was stationed in Germany and served our country honorably for two years.
Scott had many hobbies – fishing, beekeeping, gardening, hiking, traveling – to name a few. If you were
a friend, you were likely to get a bag of edible treasures from Mother Nature. It wasn’t uncommon to
find shelled hickory nuts, delectable morel mushrooms, Nelson Farm honey, or the latest harvest from
his impressive garden at your door. His love of fishing was legendary – he earned the moniker “Captain
Carp” at a young age. No fish was safe when he had a pole in his hands. Scott was also very passionate
about animals. Throughout his life he provided homes to several rescue dogs, the latest one being Ellie,
who all grew fond of cheeseburgers from McDonald’s.
Scooter, as he was known from his youth, was a political activist. He felt passionate about defending
nature and was not shy about sharing his views with our local politicians. They may or may not miss his
advice and criticism of their mis-directions.
More than anything else, Scooter valued laughing, smiling, and enjoying life with family and friends. He
remained close to many childhood friends and army buddies. Once a friend to Scooter, you were a
friend for life. He never took a friendship for granted.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Nelson, his mother Sallie (Warner) Nelson, and his
sister Debbie Nelson. He is survived by his wife of 35 years Gail (Gahagan) Nelson, his sister Heidi (Gene)
Roe, his brother Joe (Gerri) Nelson, his brother-in-law Bob Gahagan, and his brother-in-law Terry
Gahagan. He is also survived by his daughter Christel (Gary) Fintelmann, his daughter Kimberly Ford, his
daughter Michelle (Mike) Shepard, his grandchildren (Keena Schultz, Jacob Schultz, Sophia Tracy), his
nephew and niece (Cody Nelson, Paige Nelson), and multiple cousins.
Scott requested no service but asked for a celebration; we will honor this request on his birthday this
year. Be prepared to laugh and tell stories! In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Scott’s
favorite charity, the National Wildlife Federation.
The Suchon Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family. For online condolences, please

Our sincere gratitude to the Sharon Richardson Foundation and Rocky Knoll nurses and staff, who made
his last days tranquil and full of peace and laughter.
