(WHBL) – Although full closures aren’t part of the plan, motorists using Highway 23 in Sheboygan County will need to be aware of maintenance crews this week. The Wisconsin DOT plans to repair pavement on eastbound Highway 23 between County Highways “OJ” and “M” now through Thursday between 7 AM and 4 PM daily. Various lane closures will be required and drivers will need to be aware of traffic patterns and speeds in work zones.
Wisconsin has rules in place that require special attention in those areas. For instance, it’s illegal to use a handheld mobile device while driving in a work zone. Violations can cost over $160 for the first offense, and over $200 the second time around. There are exceptions for 911 calls, and hands-free and bluetooth operations are allowed. And if you exceed the posted work zone speed limit, you can face double the fines.
It all comes down to safety. In 2019 there were almost 2500 work zone crashes in Wisconsin, resulting in 899 injuries and 17 fatalities.
