A 150 megawatt solar generating project in Sheboygan County is still under review for construction, but it reached a major milestone on Thursday as the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin voted unanimously to allow Alliant Energyโs subsidiary, Wisconsin Power and Light Company, to acquire or construct, own, and operate a total of six solar generation facilities in Wisconsin. That means 675 megawatts of renewable energy will be added to Wisconsinโs power grid.
Because of its size, the Onion River project, planned to occupy 1,900 acres in the Town of Holland, will need separate approval to green-light the construction and is still under review.
PSC Chairperson Rebecca Cameron Valcq said it was appropriate that the projects were announced on the 51st anniversary of Earth Day, as these will help Wisconsin reach its goal of a carbon-free electric economy by 2050.
The total cost of the six projects is $887 million, but Alliant says its customers will see savings of around $127 million as high-cost coal-fired facilities are retired.
