They haven’t been without controversy, and cities in Wisconsin where electric scooters have appeared in the past have had to deal with developing new rules and regulations regarding them. Sheboygan is now poised to be next in line as Bird Rides Inc., which supplies “Bird” scooters, hopes to open their rental business in Sheboygan.
A direct referral to the Licensing, Hearings, and Public Safety Committee was made so discussions can be had at tomorrow’s 4 PM meeting at City Hall.
Language in the document suggests that once one company begins operations, others follow, and those scooters can have adverse impacts on public health, safety and welfare. The State of Wisconsin has a statute permitting those rentals and contains regulations that the Sheboygan Common Council has found to be appropriate to handle those concerns, but it’s up to the city to decide exactly where the scooters can, and can’t operate.
The ordinance being considered on Wednesday would limit the scooters to roadways, and prohibit their use on sidewalks, the riverfront boardwalks and on the north and south piers, and the speed must be 25 miles an hour or less. Other language regarding parking, insurance and licensing will also be discussed.
Assuming the measure passes committee, it will then be up to the full Common Council to make scooter rentals a reality.
