More than 1,400 people in Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan have been displaced by fires already this year, and when that happens, it’s likely that the American Red Cross steps in to help the victims. But that organization would like to help before the need arises through the national “Sound the Alarm – Save a Life” campaign. The goal is to educate about 100,000 people about home fire safety this spring, and to install free smoke alarms when pandemic conditions allow it to be done safely.
The core of the campaign has four steps: create an escape plan, practice that plan, place smoke alarms on each level of the home, and check the manufacturer’s date on alarms already installed. That last one is important, as Wisconsin safety statutes require their replacement after 10 years.
Participants will get a virtual appointment to set up the plan, while the Red Cross will coordinate installation of the alarms when needed.
