The battle against the coronavirus pandemic in Sheboygan County is yielding positive results, according to a release from the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health on Tuesday.
The release said that since December, the Sheboygan County Case rate has decreased 83%. The County DPH says that vaccination is now the most powerful step going forward, and in order to achieve “herd immunity”, between 60% and 90% of residents must be immunized…we’re currently at around 16%.
County Board Chairman Vernon Koch praised the vaccination team Sheboygan County has in place, which includes 34 registered vaccinators giving an average 7,000 shots a week. However, County Public Health Officer Starrlene Grossman said vaccinations alone won’t minimize the spread of the virus, especially with more contagious variants now showing up.
County Administrator Adam Payne echoed that point, saying that recent trend lines point in the direction of a return to normalcy, but reaching the goal depends upon the familiar practices of wearing a mask and physically distancing in public places – even for those fully immunized – until enough vaccinations are given to achieve herd immunity.
Those wishing to be vaccinated will find resources on the County’s COVID vaccine page at sheboygancounty.com. And if you or someone you care for needs help scheduling an appointment, assistance getting to a clinic or are unable to leave home to be vaccinated, you’re asked to please leave a message at 920-395-9890, and a Public Health patient advocate will return your call and assist you.
