The number of active cases of COVID-19 reported by the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health leapt by 14 cases with Wednesday’s regular update, as the 7 recoveries since Tuesday were outnumbered 3-to-1 by new positive test results. Those 21 confirmed cases were 28% of test results received. Hospitalizations numbered two, with one new admission since Tuesday.
The two-week rates and trajectories were updated by the State DHS, and Sheboygan County is rated as having “High” activity, with a burden of 131.9 cases per 100,000 persons. That number declined from last week’s summary, but not enough statistically to qualify for downward movement in trajectory.
As of Wednesday morning, just over 16% of Sheboygan County residents are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, and nearly 30% have had at least one shot. According to the County DPH, we need to have between 60% and 90% fully vaccinated in order to reach “herd immunity”.
Wisconsin recorded 10 more deaths attributed to COVID-19 since Tuesday, raising the toll to 6,622. 563 new cases were added, and 577,195 total in Wisconsin have now had COVID-19. 67 more persons were admitted for treatment of confirmed cases, and after accounting for deaths and discharges the state’s COVID patient population dropped 17 to 233. 59 of those are in ICU beds, and 351 ventilators are in use.
STATE SUPREME COURT STRIKES DOWN MANDATE, BUT COUNTY ENDORSES CONTINUED USE OF FACE COVERINGS
While recognizing that the Wisconsin Supreme Court has struck down Governor Tony Ever’s continued mask mandate as an unconstitutional exercise of emergency power, County Public Health reiterated its endorsement of wearing a mask whenever in public settings or in the presence of unvaccinated individuals. The message from the County DPH quoted Governor Evers who stated, “Our fight against COVID-19 isn’t over – while we work to get folks vaccinated as quickly as we can, we know wearing a mask saves lives, and we still need Wisconsinites to mask up so we can beat this virus and bounce back from this pandemic.”
