There was little change to report in the number of active cases of COVID-19 in Sheboygan County as noted in the daily update from the County Division of Public Health. 25 new cases recorded since Friday were offset by 26 recoveries to lower the active case count by 1 to 150. 13,236 cases in all have been recorded here since the start of the pandemic, and the new cases were 13.5% of test returns.
At least one of the most recent cases in Sheboygan County was identified as caused by the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in England. That variant, according to the State DHS, is believed to spread more rapidly and easily than the original strain of SARS-CoV-2, and is now suspected, but not proven, to be associated with an increased risk of death, but more studies are needed to confirm this.
Wisconsin recorded three more deaths on Monday attributed to COVID-19, raising the toll to 6,601. 296 of 3,183 tests – just over 9% – were positive, raising the total case count to 576,044. The 7-day average “percent positive by test” rate has been on the rise since March 12th, when that figure was 2.0%. It is now 2.7%. 33 more persons required hospitalization, and after factoring for deaths and discharges the state’s COVID-19 patient population dropped by 3 to 227. 58 of those are in ICU beds. 347 of the state’s 2,391 ventilators are in use overall; some of those may be among those still awaiting their test results.
