A household water leak isn’t uncommon, and most end up on a honey-do list that may or may not get done right away. But the Wisconsin Public Service Commission says that those nagging problems really should go to the front of the list of things to do, because fixing a leaky faucet or toilet doesn’t just save water…it can add up to real money.
March 15th through the 21st is recognized as Fix-a-Leak Week across the nation, and when it comes to wasting water, what seems like a small household leak can actually be pretty big. A drip rate of one per second means over 3,000 gallons in a year, enough for 180 showers. To put it in other terms, according to the PSC, 10 percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more every day, and for a year in Sheboygan that translates to sending almost $52 down the drain.
There are lots of simple things you can do to stop those leaks, and the federal EPA has online resources to help get it done, available here.
