Spring flooding isn’t unusual, but it’s happening unusually fast this year as the Sheboygan River spiked from just high water on Tuesday morning, through the “action” stage, and reached minor flooding stage at around 5 o’clock Wednesday morning.
A rise that rapid wasn’t expected by the National Weather Service, and it’s possible that a temporary ice jam downriver of the gauge at Esslingen Park was responsible. But as of 7:30am , the gauge had fallen and levels are predicted to slowly subside through the “action” stage until Sunday, causing minor lowland flooding, while marina docks and piers along the riverfront could be threatened by the high waters.
National Weather Service forecasters believe it’s unlikely levels will approach the record of 13-1/2 feet set two years ago when flooding not only affected parks, but also covered roads near the airport and forced people near 17th and New Jersey Avenue from their homes.
