August William Stiefvater, age 100 of Plymouth passed away on Monday, March 8, 2021 at St. Nicholas
Hospital in Sheboygan.
August was born on November 1, 1920 in St. Nazianz, Wi a son to the late Severin and Elsie (Lenz)
Stiefvater, the youngest of three children. His family moved to Sheboygan in 1926 and he attended Holy
Name Catholic School and Sheboygan Central High School. On November 15, 1941 he was united in
marriage to Beatrice Schultz at Holy Name Catholic Church and they had two children, Judith Ann and
Steven Kenneth. Beatrice preceded him in death in 2014.
August served in World War II from 1942 until 1945. He participated in the invasion of France, Belgium
and Germany. He received numerous medals, ribbons and four bronze battle stars. He was presented a
certificate from the president of France. He was a member of VFW Post 9156 of Sheboygan.
August worked at Armor Leather in Sheboygan for many years after returning from the service. In 1965
he and Beatrice moved to Elkhart Lake where they managed the Sheboygan County Marsh Bar and
Campsite. In 1970 he began work as building supervisor and in maintenance at Sunny Ridge Nursing
Home retiring in 1983.
August and Beatrice were longtime campers at the Westward Ho Campground where they enjoyed time
spent playing cards with their many friends. He was loved by everyone and will be truly missed.
August was a longtime member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth.
August is survived by his daughter, Judith Ann Stiefvater of Plymouth, 9 grandchildren; 14 great
grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren and 5 step grandchildren.
Along with his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a son, Steven, sister, Violet Jesinski,
brother, Arnold Stiefvater and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A Mass of Christian Burial for August will be celebrated at 12 noon on Monday, March 15 at St. John the
Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Philip Reifenberg as celebrant. Family and friends may gather at the
church, 115 Plymouth Street on Monday from 11 am until the time of Mass at noon. Entombment will
follow in Holy Cross Mausoleum in Sheboygan where military rites will be accorded.
August’s family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Waterford, St.
Nicholas Hospital ICU and the St. Nicholas Home Hospice for the gentle loving care they provided.
Memorials in August’s name are preferred.
