SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – Even as the number of active cases of COVID-19 in Sheboygan County continue a steady downward decline, deaths continue to increase, according to Monday’s report from the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health.
At its peak in Sheboygan County, active cases of COVID-19 reached 2634 on November 24th of last year, and 2020 closed with 999 active cases. As of January 25th, that’s down to 596 active, the lowest since 567 were recorded on October 15th. However deaths are mounting steadily, with 19 added in the first 25 days of this year. In the last 25 days of 2020, the toll increased by 30. The latest one added today was someone in their 70s, and the toll now stands at 112. Of the deceased so far, one was between 10 and 19 years old, two were in their 30s, four were in their 40s, five in their 50s, twenty in their 60s, twenty-six were in their 70s, and fifty-four were 80 or older.
62 of 234 test results received since Friday, or 26.5%, were positive for COVID-19, pushing the running total to 12,348 in Sheboygan County. Another 85 persons recovered. As measured according to 2-week rates and trajectories, Sheboygan County’s activity level is “Very High”, with 544.9 cases per 100,000 persons. The case trajectory has declined 27% in the last two weeks.
Over the weekend through Monday, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services added 3,746 new cases to the total which now stands at 533,917. 946 of those were recorded today, with a positive test return rate of 22.5%. Except for the Christmas holiday, the last time fewer than 1,000 cases were added in a single day in Wisconsin was September 14th. 8 more deaths were recorded today, pushing the toll to 5,699. 56 more persons were hospitalized with COVID-19, and after accounting for deaths and discharges, the patient population in the state rose 11 to 772. 175 of those occupy ICU beds, and 416 patients in all are on ventilators. Some of those may be among the 69 hospitalized who are awaiting their test returns.
