SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – Citing Sheboygan’s successful adoption of an automated cart-based garbage and recycling program, the City of Sheboygan has been recognized with one of four Projects and Initiatives Awards from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Fifteen recycling programs within a mix of businesses, nonprofits and local governments were recognized on Thursday. Brad Wolbert of the DNR said that the winners exemplify outstanding recycling and diversion practices, which the agency hopes others will emulate.
Wolbert said a communications strategy, developed by Sheboygan’s Department of Public Works along with Sun Graphics Media, was key to the successful launch of Sheboygan’s program earlier this year.
Preliminary data shows an increase of four pounds in recycling per household – accounting for a 13% increase in recycling with a total of 112 new tons.
