MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Graham Mertz had a big game in his first start as a Badger quarterback and Wisconsin rolled over Illinois 45-7 on Friday night at Camp Randall.
Mertz, a red-shirt freshman, finished 20 for 21 for 248 yards with five touchdown passes subbing for the injured Jack Coan. At one point Mertz completed 17 passes in a row, which tied a Badger record with Tanner McEvoy.
Tight end Jake Ferguson had seven catches for 72 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Mason Stokke and Danny Davis caught TD passes as well.
The only Illinois score came on a fumble return in the first half.
Wisconsin won its 25th straight home opener. They are 1-0 and will travel to Nebraska on Saturday Oct 31st.
