MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network-WSAU) Governor Tony Evers has ordered state agencies to find ways to cut $300-million from their expenditures.
Evers said the cuts are necessary due to falling state revenue during the coronavirus pandemic. Evers had called on those agencies to cut 250 million in July. All the cuts come in addition to $70-million in cuts the governor made during the previous budget year.
$120-million of the cuts will come from the state’s Medicaid program.
Joel Brennan, Secretary of Administration said, “there is no doubt that state agencies must make difficult decisions. This pandemic has affected every community in Wisconsin, and families across our state have also had to make tough decisions.”
The University of Wisconsin System will absorb $45-million of the reductions. Interim UW President Tommy Thompson had hoped the university would be spared because of earlier budget cuts and declining revenue from tuition.
