SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – Sheboygan’s Shoreline Metro system was given $2,760,000 by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as part of an $18 million public transit grant. Seven other cities also received a share of the second round of Wisconsin’s Transit Capital Assistance Grants made possible by the Volkswagen Mitigation Program. That’s part of a settlement reached after VW admitted cheating on emissions tests, thus violating the Clean Air Act.
Wisconsin DOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson called the money a much needed boost to capital investment in our public transit systems that will increase fleet performance and reduce maintenance costs.
The grant will be used here to purchase six buses, and is the second-largest grant in the group. Madison received the largest sum at 7-1/2 million dollars.
