(WHBL) – Lake Michigan’s water levels have remained at record highs since last December and, as August drew to a close, a new monthly record was established. The National Weather Service reports that dry weather in early August did help draw levels down by about two-tenths of a foot, but heavy rainfall last week reversed that trend.
The Army Corps of Engineers in Detroit reported Lakes Michigan and Huron, which behave as one, were 55 inches above normal and 5 inches higher than this time last year. Forecasters expect the lakes to decline three inches during September, and that could end the 8-month run of record levels in 2020. Still, that won’t end the ongoing threat of flooding and erosion that could accompany any strong storms that occur this fall.
