Many pursuing their dreams of turning their ideas into a successful business have to balance those hopes with the realities of needing a “real job” to pay the bills. Truman McNitt of Kohler, though, has to balance dreams with the reality of being a middle-schooler. But just like his adult counter-parts, a “Shark-Tank” style competition might provide the big break the 11-year-old needs through a scholarship thanks to his success in a business he started just last year.
The business is “Sugar Twist Trinkets”, a toy store he launched with his mother’s help after first succeeding selling cotton candy at school events. Truman’s business was successful enough to not only add three employees, but his cotton candy was made available at Chester’s Drive-in restaurant in Plymouth, and he gave back to the community by donating inventory to Sheboygan’s Foster Care Toy Drive.
Those efforts have earned Truman a place as one of four finalists vying for a $10,000 scholarship in Junior Achievement of Wisconsin’s Young Entrepreneur Live Competition which will be filmed tomorrow at Milwaukee’s Saint Kate-The Arts Hotel. We’ll all find out how he did through a web broadcast at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6th.
