Air quality remains at unhealthy levels in most of eastern Wisconsin, and the Department of Natural Resources has extended the Air Quality Alert to 6 PM. Due to wildfire smoke, the quality was considered “Hazardous” for southeast Wisconsin including Sheboygan County, “Very Unhealthy” for for south central Wisconsin, and “Unhealthy” for southwestern Wisconsin as of 10 AM. A similar breakdown existed for areas to our north, and counties included in the 6 PM extension include Manitowoc, Calumet, Fond du Lac, Washington and Ozaukee. Most Wisconsin counties were relieved of the alert at noon.

A gradual west-to-east clearing of the smoke is expected this afternoon, and while most areas will be free of the blanket by late today, the immediate shoreline of Lake Michigan may experience lingering effects into the evening hours.
Enjoy the break when it occurs, because a passing front on Saturday will likely open the door again to the smoke later tomorrow, with wind patterns serving to concentrate the pollution tomorrow night, and allow it to linger into Sunday.
