MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — Governor Tony Evers is making another plea for wearing masks and social distancing after another day of record-breaking COVID-19 case growth.
“The surges we’re seeing across the state are not an indication that masks don’t work,” Evers said during a media briefing on Thursday. “It underscores what we’ve said all along: masks only works if everyone wears them.”
Evers comments come as the state set yet another record for COVID-19 case growth. DHS reported 2,887 positive tests, or 20.1% of the 14,361 tests completed. That broke the previous record of 2,817 last Saturday. DHS also reported 21 new deaths, the third consecutive day of 20 or more deaths.
Governor Evers lamented the fact that the “Safer at Home” order he issued at the beginning of the pandemic was off the table, and said that if he could, he might issue another one.
“If we still had some authority around mitigation we would likely be looking at that,” Evers said. “Not necessarily closing businesses, but maybe mitigating and asking for smaller numbers.”
The “Safer at Home” order, issued in March, closed many publicly accessible businesses in the state. It was overturned in March after Assembly Republicans sued to overturn it.
