SWAT teams from Fond du Lac County were called to action on Sunday after a routine traffic stop revealed a wanted offender.
The events began just before 8 PM when a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle for a registration violation on County Highway “TC” near County Road “M” about 6 miles north of Waupun. After false ID was offered, the deputy recognized the suspect as one wanted for absconding on parole for original charges of robbery, as well as for bench warrants for failure to appear on charges including resisting or obstructing an officer. That prompted the driver to flee at speeds over 100 MPH to his home on Hemp Road in the Town of Waupun.
The home was soon surrounded by personnel from Waupun and Fond du Lac Police Departments and the Wisconsin State Patrol. After several fruitless hours of negotiation a SWAT team was deployed to begin the process of bringing the standoff to a solution.
Eventually, a Circuit Court judge’s order allowed the use of mechanical and armored vehicles to breach the home and establish communications. Shortly thereafter, three adults were taken into custody. A fourth person suspected to be involved could not be located.
