It’s a big day for the city of Sheboygan as The Sheboygan Fire Department officially launches its prehospital blood administration program today. This program represents a significant advancement in emergency medical care for the community.
With this implementation, the SFD will become the first EMS service in Sheboygan County to carry and administer blood products in the field. This program allows paramedics to begin life-saving blood transfusions at the scene of an emergency or while enroute to the hospital—bringing hospital-level care directly to patients when minutes matter most. Officials say severe bleeding remains one of the leading causes of preventable death in trauma patients, and early access to blood has been shown to significantly improve survival.
A limited number of EMS agencies across the state have begun implementing similar programs, placing the SFD among a small but growing group of advanced EMS providers in Wisconsin.
A blood drive is being held today, to help kick off the new program—you can donate at City of Sheboygan Fire Department – Station 3 Headquarters at 1326 N. 25th Street from 1-7pm today. Donors are asked to pre-register through this link.
