The unsupervised presence of a firearm may be the reason a two-year-old child was fatally shot in the Fond du Lac vicinity this morning. Details aren’t yet complete, and the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said that they would not be releasing additional information until the conclusion of the investigation.
What’s known at this time is that a citizen on a walk called 911 at 10:26 AM this Friday morning, reporting that a young child had sustained a gunshot injury at a nearby residence. Responding Deputies of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, along with North Fond du Lac Ambulance and Lamartine First Responders immediately began life saving efforts and called for ThedaStar Medical Helicopter. However, the child did not survive treatment at the scene.
The preliminary report of events indicates that three young children were placed in a vehicle in the driveway of their home, and in the brief time their parent went back into the home to grab an item they’d forgotten, and then returned to the vehicle, a four-year-old inside that vehicle located a loaded firearm in the center console. That firearm discharged, striking a two-year-old sibling victim. There were no other injuries, and foul play is not suspected.
Condolences were extended to the family and friends, while the Sheriff’s Office also urged residents to safely store firearms out of the reach of children at all times.
