Lindee Brill, Republican Representative for the 27th Assembly District
A Sheboygan area legislator is asking Wisconsin’s federal delegation to raise the age for protection under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act from 13 to 16 years old.
27th Assembly District Representative Lindee Brill of Sheboygan Falls heads the Speaker’s Task Force on Protecting Kids, and has sent a joint letter on behalf of the task force, signed by all members, asking for the change.
A recent task force hearing received extensive testimony emphasizing that adolescents remain highly susceptible to online data collection, targeted advertising and other forms of exploitation well into their mid-teens. That exposure is believed to have significant potential to impact mental health, including increased anxiety and depression that’s closely related to data-driven content targeting teens.
Brill said that raising the age would be a “meaningful step towards keeping our kids safe online,” protecting millions of adolescents from online exploitation.
