WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States is reviewing the work of two organizations linked to China’s United Front Work Department (UFWD), an organ of the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Committee, over its attempts to exert influence on schools, business groups and local politicians, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday.
In a speech on Wednesday in Wisconsin, Pompeo also delivered a stark warning to local politicians there and across the country to be vigilant against any Chinese diplomats approaching them, saying such efforts might be part of Beijing’s “propaganda and espionage campaign.”
