A 64-year-old Manitowoc woman was sentenced to eighteen months’ imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release by US District Judge Lynn Adelman on Tuesday. Cherie Campion was also ordered to pay over $10 million in restitution.
Federal court records show that Campion generated and submitted thousands of fraudulent invoices through her temporary staffing agency. Her actions were responsible for losses of $5 million and nearly $5.4 million ($5,389,371.51) for the two companies she deceived. Campion pled guilty to both counts.
When considering the sentence, Judge Adelman cited the sophistication and intricacies of her operations which involved generation of false records, and using technology to create a fictitious persona in order to deceive her victims.
