A Sheboygan County conservation organization has again been given money from the State of Wisconsin to protect the Sheboygan River Watershed.
Sheboygan River Progressive Farmers was granted $26,800 in the eleventh round of awards from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection’s producer-led watershed protection grant program. One million dollars in all was awarded to 49 farmer-led groups for 2026 in amounts ranging from $2,800 up to $30,000.
The DATCP says that grants have focused on providing conservation education to farmers, conducting on-farm demonstrations and research, issuing incentive payments for implementing conservation practices, organizing field days, and gathering data on soil health and water quality.
In 2024, groups in the program delivered conservation practices on over 1.7 million acres, an increase from 1.5 million in 2023. This includes a 34% increase in no-till practices, a 2% increase in nutrient management, and a 37% increase in cover crop adoption.
