More details have become known concerning a natural gas line explosion near Cascade on Friday afternoon.
According to a release from the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at about 1:15 PM Friday, with 911 calls referencing an explosion on Trio Lane in the Town of Mitchell just west of the Village of Cascade received by 1:18PM. Numerous responders soon arrived to discover that an excavation crew had ruptured a 10-inch, high-pressure natural gas line, sending rocks and debris accompanying the blast of gas with such force that it rendered two nearby homes uninhabitable. The resulting cloud turned out not to be from an explosion, but rather by the high pressure gas eroding dirt and dust, sending it into the surrounding air.
An immediate evacuation of the 3-miles surrounding the site was ordered, but that was eventually reduced to a 1/2-mile radius from the intersection of Trio Lane and County Highway “F”. Reports claim that a total of 4 people required hospital treatment, including one member of the excavating crew who was transported from the scene with unknown injuries.
The evacuation was lifted and traffic restored to CTH “F” by 8 PM Friday.
