A surge of scam calls has a regional utility partnering with the Sheboygan Police Department and others throughout the region in an effort to protect the public from loss.
Wisconsin Public Service has reported a sharp increase in utility scam attempts across northeast and north central Wisconsin over the past week. The scammers are aggressively contacting customers by phone, threatening disconnection unless an immediate payment is made, and asking for account or banking information. Many of those contacted are businesses or religious organizations, but residential customers are not immune. The utility said that some customers have already fallen victim, with losses exceeding $10,000 so far this week.
The Sheboygan Police Department is warning the public to hang up on any callers threatening disconnection with demands for immediate payment or requests to pay bills with a pre-paid card.
Wisconsin Public Service says that customers who suspect the scam can check with the utility at 800-450-7260 to verify their account status directly. And if you’ve been victimized, call the Sheboygan Police Department at 920-459-3333.
