Lightning is apparently behind a Monday afternoon gas leak in Elkhart Lake. Shortly before 4 PM yesterday the Elkhart Lake and Glenbeulah Fire Departments were called to Point Elkhart where the smell of natural gas was in the air. By the time they arrived, Wisconsin Public Service Utility staff were already on site of an obvious leak, which was then isolated. Given the potential danger, crews were quickly deployed to evacuate people from the area as needed.
Crews went door-to-door, checking nearby residences for levels of gas and to begin ventilation. One unit did test high, and venting and monitoring was continued until it was safe for people to return.
Crews determined that lightning was the likely cause. While no residents there suffered any illness, one firefighter did develop minor sickness, and Elkhart Lake and Glenbeulah EMS, along with Orange Cross, provided care on-site. The scene was declared safe by 5:45 PM.
