The long buildup is over and it’s time for powerboat racing in Sheboygan. The Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge series of races takes place Saturday between 8 AM and 10 PM, and a second round is on Sunday until 5:30. The course takes the high-speed boats, and this year, jet skis, from the marina southward nearly to Black River.
Before all that, though, the downtown Block Party takes place from 6-10 tonight, centered at City Green, but a large area of the downtown will be closed off for the boat parade, displays, live music and food trucks.
Street closures of Broughton Drive, South Pier Drive, Penn Avenue and South 7th Street from Clara to Ashland Avenues will be in place on Saturday and Sunday to allow crowds to view the races, and on both days King Park will host “Boats, Bites n’ Brews”.
The Sheboygan Police Department reminds the public that alcohol is prohibited on all city beaches for the event. The exceptions are in the designated area on the South Pier district and at King Park, and there will be extra officers on duty to patrol, and help out if needed.
